External Wall Insulation (EWI) Overview
External wall insulation involves applying an insulating layer to the outer surface of an existing wall. To safeguard it from weather conditions, this insulation is covered with a protective render or alternative cladding. This method is particularly useful for solid-wall properties where cavity wall insulation is not an option.
While adding insulation enhances a home's thermal efficiency, it’s important to consider potential challenges—mainly how your property manages moisture. External wall insulation can be installed either as a single measure (paid option) where only the walls are insulated or as a double measure (potentially free based on eligibility) when combined with a boiler replacement.
External Wall Insulation for Solid Brick Walls
Brick quality varies widely, and one common issue is freeze-thaw damage, where moisture seeps into bricks, freezes, and causes surface flaking. External insulation, similar to stone insulation, has minimal impact on a wall’s overall performance. For solid brick walls, rigid foam insulation is typically sufficient. The insulation can be mechanically fixed to the wall and covered with render, wood, or other protective materials to enhance durability and appearance.
